Global sales of 5G phones accounted for 51% of total shipments in the first month of the year.
Sales of 5G phones were higher than those of 4G equipment in the first month of this 2022.
According to a report by Counterpoint Research , 51% of cell phone sales were from devices with 5G connectivity , the first time in history that they surpassed mobile phones with 4G connectivity.
Regions with majority impact
According to the report, China, North America and Western Europe were the main markets that marked this trend. In China alone, the sale of 5G cell phones represents 84% of the total units in January.
5G smartphone penetration in North America and Western Europe reached 73% and 76%, respectively. Apple dominates North America and Western Europe with a sales share of more than 50% and 30%, respectively. After Apple switched to 5G in October 2020 with the iPhone 12 series , both regions saw a natural increase in 5G smartphone sales penetration .
These regions are expected to continue to contribute substantially to 5G sales globally, as even without offering competitive specs, there is an immense and ongoing demand for a 5G upgrade within the iOS user base.
Thanks to affordable chips offered by MediaTek and Qualcomm, 5G Android smartphones entered the mid-high price segment ($250-$400) and are now dropping to the $150-$250 price range, contributing a fifth part of 5G sales in January.
Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Latin America will be the next focus areas to increase 5G penetration. 5G models in the sub-$150 price segment are the sweet spot for these regions, which are currently dominated by 4G , according to the company.
