WhatsApp plans to launch cash-back rewards in a few days to attract Indian users to its payment service. The instant messaging app will also test similar incentives for business payments.

WhatsApp is reportedly looking to compete with rivals in the payment service industry, including Google Pay  and Apple Pay .

This decision by WhatsApp comes after the company obtained regulatory approval to expand its payment service to 100 million users in India, its largest market with more than 500 million users overall.

WhatsApp ‘s new proposal consists of launching a refund offer of up to 33 rupees (US $ 0.40) for the transactions that users carry out in its payment service. This service allows users to send their contacts funds from WhatsApp , people familiar with the company’s plans said, according to Reuters .

The incentive will be spread over three transactions and will be awarded regardless of the amount that is transferred, even if it is the minimum of 1 rupee.

The company confirmed to Reuters that it is  “running a campaign that offers gradual cashback incentives to our users as a way to unlock the potential of WhatsApp payments.”
