But updates on the project have been rare thus far. Now, finally, director Joe Cornish has returned to the subject, confirming that he and star John Boyega are developing the film, taking all the time necessary to make it better.

Speaking to Deadline , Cornish said:

The first Attack the Block was made in total secrecy, so we had time to make the best movie possible. We are now in the middle of that process.

Boyega will not only return as the protagonist, but also as a producer, through his UpperRoom Productions. Film4 and Studiocanal are also producing the sequel. Cornish continued:

John and I have a very detailed subject and are doing some research to understand reality and then merge it with sci-fi fantasy. We go around the real world with some brilliant researchers and find people whose lives intersect with those characters, to add detail and realism. It’s a co-production and we’ll take our time to achieve perfection.

The original Attack the Block , released in 2011, was a modern homage to 1980s American sci-fi films, centering on a group of tough South London kids who are forced to deal with an invasion of alien predators in their housing projects. The film launched John Boyega, who moved on from there to star in the new Star Wars trilogy . The cast also included future Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker .
