Pink plays an important role in Barbie , the feature film dedicated to the legendary line of fashion dolls launched by Mattel in the late 1950s.
We have seen it in the various videos released for the promotional launch of the film but perhaps we have no idea how much pink was used to make this film.
Well, according to Architectural Digest, Greta Gerwig ‘s film has caused a global shortage of pink. For the director, that color was very important:
I wanted the pinks to be very bright and everything to be over the top, I didn’t want to forget what made me adore Barbie as a child.
Production designers Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer confirmed that the construction of the sets resulted in an international shortage of a particular fluorescent shade of Rosco paints. As stated by Greenwood:
The world has run out of pink!
So much pink paint was used on the set of Greta Gerwig’s ‘BARBIE’ that it caused an international shortage, according to production designer Sarah Greenwood.

Barbie also stars America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Ariana Greenblatt, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Hari Nef and Will Ferrell . Greta Gerwig ( Lady Bird, Little Women ) co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach ( Marriage Story ). Margot Robbie will produce under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner with partner Tom Ackerley . Robbie Brenner will produce for Mattel, David Heyman for Heyday Films. LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara and Mattel’s Ynon Kreiz serve as executive producers.
