The 27th edition of Cartoons on the Bay , which will take place from May 31 to June 4 in Pescara, has announced its schedule.
There are over 300 works in competition, coming from more than 50 countries; the guest of this edition is Germany. Peter Lord , Ari Folman , Ian Mackinnon, Altan and Bruno Bozzetto will be the five great guests of the edition.
Lord and Folman will receive the Pulcinella Lifetime Achievement Awards. The official press release reads:
The professional program is full of meetings including panels, Knote, masterclasses, which will see the greatest Masters of animation, videogames and metaverses as protagonists. To Peter Lord and Ari Folman , respectively the signatures behind masterpieces such as Wallace & Gromit and Waltz with Bashir the Pulcinella Awards for Lifetime Achievement, to Ian MacKinnon , key master of the Pinocchio puppets , Guillermo del Toro ‘s Oscar-winning masterpiece , the award as studio of the year and the Cuphead phenomenon , between cartoons and videogames, the new Transmedia award of the event. In Altan, the Sergio Bonelli Award, which last year was awarded to Zerocalcare and Carlos Grangel .
Cartoons on the Bay confirms its formula which enhances Rai’s teamwork by involving Rai Kids, RaiPlay and Rai Radio Kids through live shows, events for the public and for schools such as the musical of the Winx or that of the Puppies , the presence of the most famous mascots of the programs broadcast on Rai Gulp and Rai Yoyo and of the faces most loved by children such as those of Andrea Lucchetta and Armando Traverso , who will be accompanied by the now famous Rai Radio Kids DJ. A real cross-media project will involve Rai Play which will exclusively host some parts of the festival program such as the retrospectives dedicated to Peter Lord and Ian Mackinnon and the special for the 140th anniversary of the first publication ofCollodi ‘s Pinocchio .
Among the guests most awaited by children also Pera Toons who will intervene in the program and sign copies of his latest book and Giorgio Vanni with his concert on the most famous theme songs of cartoons who will be able to entertain children, parents and grandparents together for an afternoon . The highly anticipated preview of the film Knights of the Zodiac scheduled for 1 June at 9 pm at the Cinema Massimo theater and the Fun & Games Village, where for the first time the festival will host a tournament of the famous Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game . The Cartoons on the Bay 2023 poster is entrusted to Monica Manganelli , set designer of Cloud Atlasand some of the most innovative and experimental theatrical works of recent years to which the festival exhibition is also dedicated.
Cartoons on the Bay 2023 will take place at the Aurum (professional programme), at Piazza della Rinascita (public programme) and at the Teatro Cinema Massimo (previews, retrospectives and competing titles). Free admission to all activities.
