Andy Jassy , Amazon ‘s current CEO , called the success of ChatGPT “exciting,” but noted that his company has been developing similar technology for some time.
ChatGPT continues to be the favorite topic of conversation in the technology industry, so it will always be a good time for the most important representatives of this industry to talk about it. Andy Jassy , current CEO of Amazon , weighed in on the conversation about generative artificial intelligence and the OpenAI platform in a new interview.
In a new conversation with the Financial Times , the entrepreneur mentioned that “what is possible with generative artificial intelligence is exciting and is part of what is being seen with models like ChatGPT . ” However, he also noted that “most of the big, deeply technical companies [like Amazon ] have been working on these very large generative AI models themselves for a long time . ”
Generative AI originated before ChatGPT
While Amazon already boasts AI and machine learning technology such as the Alexa voice assistant and CodeWhisperer , a code recommendation generator, enthusiasts of the Jeff Bezos- founded company still fear the tech giant is falling behind in the generative AI department, according to what the portal indicated.
Specifically, generative AI refers to algorithms trained to produce new text, images, code, video, or audio. “ Microsoft is clearly ahead of the game and has gained a lot of ground in this area,” Matt McIlwain , managing director of Madrona Venture Group – an early Amazon investor – told the Financial Times in an interview.
In addition, Mcllwain added that Amazon needs to be aware of the trend towards intelligent and generative applications, saying that it “must have a strategic response” to ChatGPT and other possible platforms that will launch in the coming years.
Amazon defends its position in the AI market
Andy Jassy noted that Amazon is also looking at opportunities to partner with smaller companies to develop this area of the business, but declined to share details in the interview. One of these would be Stability AI , a competitor to OpenAI that recently declared the company its “preferred cloud partner” for training and building its AI models.
As we mentioned, Amazon ‘s forays into generative AI include Alexa, launched in 2014. David Limp , Amazon ‘s senior vice president of devices and services , told the Times of London that the company is improving its voice assistant to make it more conversational because it is currently very “transactional” and can only answer questions.
Additionally, Limp noted that while ChatGPT is a “sane competitor” to Alexa , it lacks the personality, memory, and insight that Alexa currently has. “If you were to ask Alexa details about the World Cup, who scored which goal in which match, Alexa would know. Real-time knowledge is just as important as the ability to write a script, something ChatGPT does quite well. Alexa is quite personalized nowadays. It remembers things like your favorite music ,” said the executive.
