DGA AWARDS: JANE CAMPION GETS THE SECOND NOMINATION, A RECORD FOR SPIELBERG

Directors Guild of America named Jane Campion (Dog Power).

Kenneth Branagh (Belfast), Denis Villeneuve (Dune), Steven Spielberg (West Side Story) and Adam McKay (Don’t Look Up) as Best Directors of 2021 .

This is the second nomination for the Campion after Piano Lessons (1994) and the eleventh for a woman in the DGA feature film category. Only one other female director earned two nominations: Kathryn Bigelow winning The Hurt Locker (2009) and nominated for Zero Dark Thirty (2012). This year Bigelow is nominated in the commercial video category for the iPhone commercial.

Record for Spielberg who, thanks to his twelfth nomination in the category, breaks his record as director with the highest number of nominations. In second place with 10 Martin Scorsese .

A curiosity if we wanted to continue this list with the directors still alive, we should skip those with 7 and 6 nominations, up to Woody Allen and Francis Ford Coppola with 5.

In the first feature category we find four Netflix films : Rebecca Hall (Passing), Lin-Manuel Miranda (tick, tick … BOOM!), Tatiana Huezo (Prayers for the Stolen), Michael Sarnoski (Pig) and Emma Seligman (Shiva Baby ).

Usually the DGAs are the most accurate when it comes to nominations, and even more so the Oscar winners, only 8 times in 73 years the winner has not been the same.
