The plot

In Season 3: Emily Dickinson’s most productive period as an artist coincides with the raging American Civil War and an equally ferocious battle that divides her own family from within. As Emily tries to heal the divisions around her, she wonders if art can help keep hope alive and if the future can be better than the past.

About the end of this journey, Hailee Steinfeld said:

I am very proud of what we have achieved and how much we have grown during the making. It was a real emotional rollercoaster, both on and off the screen, and all of this in the best possible way. We have had so many experiences together in a rather short period of time.
I will always remember this moment in my career and I will always be proud and honored to have played such an extraordinary character. And also to have embarked on this creative path as an actress and executive producer. I have learned so much and am so thankful for this experience.

As stated by executive producer Paul Lee , this is the perfect ending:

When you see the Season 3 finale, you’ll know it’s the perfect ending. Are we sorry to end after three seasons? Of course we are sorry. Is it the right thing to do? It is the perfect choice.

Showrunner Alena Smith shares the same opinion :

Once she reaches the pinnacle of her creativity, she is practically an adult. So I realized that the story to tell was over.
