Nothing CEO Carl Pei knows how to get people excited about his next smartphone that no one has ever heard of before.

Pei is the brains behind OnePlus and its early marketing strategy, with an invite-based  OnePlus 1 sales formula.

Now, Pei has confirmed that he wants to go back to this exclusive, invite-only purchase option with his Nothing Phone (1) , and now, the company has provided new details of his strategy: if you want to buy the Phone first (1), you’ll have to buy a pass.

When is the Phone (1) coming?

To get a chance to claim a Phone (1) right after the  launch event on July 12 , you’ll first need to register on Nothing’s website to join the waiting list. You will then receive an invitation to purchase an advance pass for a  £20 non-refundable deposit.

This will ensure that you will be able to pre-order the Phone (1) . Fortunately, the presale deposit will be deducted from the final price, so it does not mean that you will have paid an extra amount to get the device. The pass will also give you an “exclusive reward”.

The waiting list is filling up fast, with more than 6,000 people at the time of this writing.

However, enthusiasts in the US won’t be able to buy a Phone (1) any time soon, as Nothing has confirmed that it won’t be officially launching in the US.
