Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education) will begin filming on the fourteenth season of Doctor Who in November, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
The actor will replace Jodie Whittaker , the Thirteenth Doctor, who will bid farewell to the character in a special episode that airs this October as part of the BBC ‘s centennial celebrations .
In a second special episode, according to THR there could be three, scheduled for the end of 2023 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the franchise, David Tennant will reprise the role of the Doctor.
The special has not yet been filmed but recent comments by one of its performers, Neil Patrick Harris , have led to speculation that Gatwa will appear there and that we will see the incarnation of the Doctor of Tennant regenerate in that of Gatwa .
The return of the Christmas special?
According to TV Zone, Russell T. Davies , who will return as showrunner after twelve years, is conducting talks between the Doctor Who production team and the BBC to restore the Christmas specials starting in 2023.
These specials will follow the characters played by Tennant and Catherine Tate (Donna Noble), who will reprise the roles of the Time Lord and his companion, respectively.
The Christmas special was a constant of the seasons with Davies and Steven Moffat in the role of showrunner, from 2005 to 2017.
