It’s been more than four years since Duke Nukem was in development.

At Michael Bay ‘s Platinum Dunes , but that project – which featured John Cena ‘s potential involvement – has faded.

Nevertheless, the film based on the video game saga of the same name will be made with Legendary Pictures : The Hollywood Reporter in fact reports that the studio has joined forces with Josh Heald , Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg ‘s Counterbalance Entertainment to produce the transposition.

The latter are the creators of Cobra Kai , and have already shown that they can transform an initially unpleasant character like Johnny Lawrence into an audience darling. Even Duke Nukem himself , parody of the action heroes of the eighties and nineties, is far from today’s tastes (let’s say it’s very inappropriate), so it will be interesting to see how they adapt it. Among the producers will also be Jean-Julien Baronnet of Mara Studios , already involved in Assassin’s Creed . Before moving to Legendary , the rights to the game were held by Gearbox .

The search for a screenwriter is underway, while for directing it cannot be ruled out that one of Heald , Hurwitz and Schlossberg decides to sit behind the camera. No other information is available, but we will keep you updated.

Duke Nukem

Speaking of Duke Nukem , fans will remember him as one of the major first-person shooters of the nineties, even though the first two chapters – developed by Apogee Software , then 3D Realms – were of the platform genre . The great consecration of the saga came with the release of Duke Nukem 3D in 1996, when the game was renewed in a fps key, establishing itself as an icon of the videogame realm. Its legendary sequel, Duke Nukem Forever , has instead made history for the wrong reasons: announced in 1997, it was only published in 2011 after 14 years of productive travail, during which it passed into the hands of various software houses .

Duke Nukem ‘s main trait is his swashbuckling and ironically vulgar character, as if he were a parody of old action movie heroes: muscular, steroid-packed, smashing jokes and surrounding himself with beautiful naked women, attending strip clubs and red light cinema. In the midst of all this, he also finds time to fight the invading aliens on Earth.
