Elon Musk discussed how “excellent” Russian motors are, following Russia ‘s decision to stop sales in the US following sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine.
Elon Musk recently addressed the quality of Russian engines , amid Russia ‘s decision to halt rocket engine sales to the US.
In an interview with Mathias Döpfner, the CEO of Insider’s parent company, which took place at the Tesla factory in Fremont, California, Musk called the Russian-made RD-180 engine “a great engine.”
He also acknowledged the use of Russian engines by American aerospace companies, including Boeing and Lockheed Martin .
ULA , a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin , relies on the RD-180 engine to power its Atlas V rocket, according to The Verge . The plan is for the engine for ULA ‘s new Vulcan rocket to be produced by Blue Origin, though the delays have caused frustration.
In the midst of the storm
Musk ‘s comments come as Russia has stopped supplying rocket engines to the US . USA . in retaliation for sweeping sanctions over the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
“In a situation like this, we cannot supply the United States with the best rocket engines in our world. Let them fly on something else, on their broomsticks, I don’t know what ,” said Dmitry Rogozin, head of the Russian space agency, at that moment.
This also caused mockery among workers at Elon Musk ‘s SpaceX during his next launch.
” It’s time to let the American broom fly and listen to the sounds of freedom ,” SpaceX launch engineer Julia Black said just before liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket carrying the company’s latest batch of 48 Starlink satellites .
“Is it dangerous for the United States of America?” Döpfner asked Musk.
In response, Musk said: ” Boeing and Lockheed have relied heavily on the Russian RD-180 engine. What I have to say, to be fair, is a great engine.”
He added: “They hope to get away from that in the future with engines from Blue Origin. There’s also the Antares that uses the RD-180, I think. As a result, they won’t be able to fly.”
Antares is a two-stage rocket vehicle manufactured by Northrop Grumman that provides low-Earth orbit capability for payloads up to 8,000 kg. It is primarily used for NASA’s commercial resupply missions as part of the company’s contract with the space agency.
