CES 2023 , the world’s largest technology fair, continues its course in Las Vegas and the main companies in this field have already begun to broadcast their conferences, where they reveal a series of news about what is coming for their part. Being one of the major companies participating in the event, Sony also had its moment on stage and left us with a variety of announcements related to one of its biggest businesses: gaming .
During its press conference at CES 2023 , the technology firm shared news related to PlayStation , its video game division. In addition to revealing that the PS5 shortage seems to have ended thanks to the number of reported sales, the company showed an interesting addition to its current console and the first preview of one of its new film productions.
Next, we will tell you everything that Sony showed during its CES 2023 conference .
Project Leonardo, the accessibility control for PS5
Sony opened its conference with an announcement that, once again, reinforces its commitment to ensure that all people can access their video games without problems. Project Leonardo is an accessibility controller kit for PS5 that is currently under development. The goal of this device is to “remove barriers to gaming and help gamers with disabilities play more easily, more comfortably, and for longer on PS5 . ” This team was created with input from accessibility experts, game developers, and members of the PlayStation fan community .
At the moment, the release date and price of Project Leonardo is unknown , as well as if this is its final name or just a provisional one
Gran Turismo movie shown for the first time
While a film for Gran Turismo , the hit PlayStation car franchise , was already known to be in development, nothing more was known about the project until the release of its first trailer during CES 2023 . The material shown includes the participation of stars such as Archie Madekwe, Orlando Bloom and David Harbour. From what has been shown, it seems that the film will combine elements of real racing and the frenetic action of the saga.
The Gran Turismo movie will hit theaters in August 2023.
PlayStation 5 has sold more than 30 million units
Since its launch in November 2020, PlayStation 5 has gone through a rather particular situation since it had to deal with both the COVID-19 pandemic and the shortage of semiconductors that affected the entire technology industry in order to distribute units. While it was public knowledge that the console was particularly hard to come by because of these factors, Jim Ryan – PlayStation president – revealed that the console has already sold more than 30 million units.
In addition, the executive noted that the absence of PS5 in certain markets has already ended: “everyone who wants a PS5 should have an easier time finding it in stores around the world from now on ,” Ryan mentioned.
Gran Turismo 7 will have PSVR 2 support
The new virtual reality viewer for PlayStation 5 will be released in February, but Sony has already announced some news regarding this addition. The company mentioned that Gran Turismo 7 will be playable on PSVR 2 when the hardware hits stores and will arrive as a free update for everyone who owns the game in question.
In addition, Beat Saber – one of the most popular VR titles – is also coming to PSVR 2. However, the release date has not been revealed yet.
Afeela, the creature of Sony and Honda
To close the conference, Sony stepped away from video games to reveal the project it has been working on for a long time with Honda : Afeela , the electric car of this alliance. What many years ago was known as Vision-S has mutated as a result of the collaboration between these two firms since now, unlike its prototype, it has its own design.
According to what the company indicated, Afeela will have more than 40 sensors including cameras, radar, ultrasound and LiDAR on its exterior. In this way, it will have a better ability to detect objects and be able to drive autonomously. It was even mentioned that Afeela would have a PS5 console inside, but this is just an idea for now.
Afeela pre-orders will start in 2025, so the vehicle is expected to be on sale in 2026.
