During an interview with The Independent for the promotion of his new film as director, Flag Day , Penn was reflecting on what he calls a certain “arrogance of white American males” who believe that “the American Dream that has been promised to them. it is their due “.

Sean Penn then elaborated on this portrait of today’s man by stating that there would be “an absence of male behavior” in today’s society. The actor further elaborated:

I am among those who believe that men in American society have been heavily feminized. I don’t think being a brute or a numb person or disrespecting women has anything to do with masculinity, or ever had one. But I don’t think that, to be fair to women, we should become women.

Sean Penn later reiterated his position in another interview:

I think men, as far as I’m concerned, have been quite feminized. I have very strong women in my life who don’t see masculinity as a sign of oppression towards them. There are a lot, I think, of cowardly geniuses that lead people to give up on jeans and wear skirts.
