George RR Martin saw the first episode of House of the Dragon , the Game of Thrones prequel series that will tell the story of House Targaryen . The response? Definitely favorable. As the author wrote on his blog :

Don’t tell anyone… but I saw a preliminary cut from the first episode.
I loved it. It’s dark, powerful, visceral… just the way I like the fantasy epic.
Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik (the showrunners) did a great job, and then the cast… just like with Game of Thrones, most audiences will only have heard of a few actors. But I really think that many of them will enter your hearts. And they will tear them apart when later with the story … No, so I would tell you too much.
I really think the Targaryens are in very good hands. You will not be disappointed, I anticipate it.

The cast

The series will be based on Fire & Blood , Martin’s book about the rise and fall of the Targaryens. The show will be set 300 years before Game of Thrones . The cast will include Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower), Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen), Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower), Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon), Eve Best (Rhaenys Velaryon), Fabien Frankel ( Criston Cole) and Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria). Paddy Considine will be King Viserys I. With them also Graham McTavish (Ser Harrold Westerling),Ryan Corr (Ser Harwin Strong), Jefferson Hall (in the dual role of Lord Jason Lannister and Ser Tyland Lannister), David Horovitch (Grand Master Mellos), Matthew Needham (Layrs Strong), Bill Patterson (Lord Lyman Beesbury) and Gavin Spokes ( Lord Lyonel Strong).
