Denzel Washington has joined the cast of Gladiator 2 , which will see him reunite with director Ridley Scott sixteen years after American Gangster .

His role has not been disclosed, but, according to journalist Jeff Sneider , he will be a mentor of the protagonist and will teach him the art of wrestling. Washington will join Paul Mescal and possibly Barry Keoghan in the cast of the ambitious sequel. Mescal will play Lucio, the son of Lucilla ( Connie Nielsen ), and perhaps the secret son of Massimo Decimo Meridio. Keoghan should instead play Publius Septimius Geta, son of Septimius Severus and co-emperor with his much more famous brother Caracalla, who, after a short time, had him killed. Russell Crowe , hero of the first film , has confirmed that he will not return in the sequel.

Scott will produce with Michael Pruss, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher . David Scarpa ( The Man in the High Castle, All the Money in the World ) wrote the final draft of the screenplay.

After casting Mescal, Ridley Scott, Paramount Pictures president and CEO Brian Robbins and co-presidents Daria Cercek and Michael Ireland reportedly pushed for a big star in the film’s other lead role and contacted Washington. Initially there was skepticism about his involvement: Washington is known for choosing projects with extreme care. But, after reading the script, it seems that the actor was impressed by the role conceived by the director with him in mind and signed immediately after meeting Scott and hearing his pitch.

Also returning from the original film are Oscar-winning costume designer Janty Yates and Oscar-nominated production designer Arthur Max . That’s all for now, we will keep you updated.
