We knew Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special would be canon and officially close out Marvel’s Phase 4.

But we had no idea how much, exactly, it would affect the overall events of the MCU. Now that the Special is out we have an answer.

There are two very important details that the Special introduces. Let’s start with the least surprising, but still crucial: the headquarters of the Guardians of the Galaxy is now Everywhere. Not in the sense of the adverb “anywhere”, in the sense of Knowhere, a Celestial’s head turned city which, evidently after the events of Avengers: Endgame (but it is unknown whether before or after Thor: Love and Thunder ), the Guardians bought from the Collector to make it their own home. Who will venture to the cinema to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 without having seen the Christmas special (which James Gunn called an “aperitif”before the film), he won’t understand this particular twist. But this is the least: let’s move on to the main course.

Mantis is Peter Quill’s half-sister. Suspicion had long existed in that magnificent cauldron of speculation that is the Internet. You owe it to the actress Jennifer Sharp , who, in 2017, posted on Instagram a photo of her portraying her on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 . The text read: “It was an honor to work with Kurt Russell even for a brief flashback in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 , as the mother of Mantis.” The post was later edited to remove any references to the flashback and her character identity. However, the screenshot of the post ended up on Reddit.

As you may recall, in the film it was discovered that Ego had kidnapped, in fact, several women of many alien species to try to conceive a child who would help him assimilate the universe. Putting two and two together, some had therefore concluded that Mantis was also the daughter of Ego, and evidently James Gunn had considered making this link explicit, before deciding otherwise.

Now it’s official, and undoubtedly this revelation will have repercussions for the third film. It certainly changes the dynamic of the group of protagonists, and it will be interesting to see how Gunn exploits this in the new chapter of the saga, arriving in May next year.
