As usual, James Gunn intervened on twitter to resolve a doubt of the fans about Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 , confirming what is reported by an article by The Direct . Let’s continue after the jump!

If you’ve seen the movie, you know that Rocket and the Guardians defeat the High Evolutionary after rescuing all living beings held captive in his spaceship. Our beloved raccoon, however, refuses to give him the coup de grace … and what happens to the obnoxious geneticist? Does he explode with his ship? On the contrary: the Guardians also save him, and there is even a shot in which Drax can be seen carrying his lifeless body to Knowhere . There is also a cut scene where it is more clearly seen that he survives. Responding to a fan, Gunn said:

Yes! It’s the culmination of Rocket’s journey. The fact that he doesn’t kill him just demonstrates the change that has taken place in him – he goes from being the least empathetic of the Guardians to becoming the most empathetic of them all. He’d be foolish and hollow if he’d refused to kill him only to leave him aboard a ship about to explode. And, yes, there is a deleted scene. It was great, but it disturbed the pacing of the finale. But you will see it in the extras at the end.

The director then adds that the High Evolutionary is imprisoned on Knowhere , following the events of the film.

So there’s room for the supervillain’s eventual return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe , but now the job of deciding what to do with it rests with Marvel Studios , as Gunn will be busy running DC Studios with Peter Safran (and directing Superman: Legacy ). We’ll see.
