He’s preparing to reveal the long-term plan for the DCU to Warner Bros.

Discovery within the next couple of months. The director confirmed this on Twitter recently, in response to a fan.

But first, Gunn will have to conclude his experience at Marvel with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 , due out in May 2023 . Speaking with Deadline , the director confessed how he feels about the idea of leaving Marvel for DC:

I feel very comfortable. I feel very good. We made it. I think it’s funny that Guardians needed a drink before Volume 3 , which is a huge movie. I had a plan from the beginning.

That plan, in short, was to wrap up Rocket’s story:

The reason I had to finish this project is that I love the character of Rocket more than any character I’ve ever written before, and I had to finish his story and that’s what Volume 3 is about . I absolutely had to do it and I think we did it in a spectacular way that I can’t wait for people to see.

Speaking of the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn has specified that, if ever someone is chosen to replace him at the helm, he will find himself having to direct a group of characters very different from his own:

It will never be the same set of characters for many different reasons. Who knows what will happen with the Guardians franchise in terms of new characters, but as far as this group of characters is concerned, that’s the end of their story.
