Paul Feig is preparing to direct his next film, the sci-fi action-comedy Grand Death Lotto , and now he has chosen an impressive trio of leads to lead the cast.
Central to the film will be John Cena , Awkwafina , and Simu Liu . The latter two have previously worked together in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings .
Written by Rob Yescombe ( Outside the Wire ), Grand Death Lotto will be set in the near future, in a California in the throes of economic crisis. The state has created a Grand Lottery, and Katie (Awkwafina), a young girl who has just moved to Los Angeles, accidentally ends up with the winning ticket. The problem? The rules state that whoever kills the winner by sunset will collect the prize money. Katie thus hires the bodyguard Noel (Cena), to arrive alive at sunset. However, the two will have to contend with Noel’s rival, Louis Lewis (Liu), who in turn intends to protect Katie to collect a rich commission at sunset.
Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum of Roth/Kirschenbaum Films will produce the film, which will be an Amazon Original for Prime Video, along with Laura Fischer and Paul Feig for Feigco Entertainment. Cena, Zack Roth and Yescombe will serve as executive producers. Filming will start next week.
Jennifer Salke , head of Amazon and MGM Studios, said:
Grand Death Lotto is the kind of original idea viewers crave, and there couldn’t be anyone better than the infinitely talented Paul Feig at the helm of the ship. We can’t wait to see John Cena, Awkwafina and Simu Liu bring this fun and action-packed script to life for our Prime Video customers around the world.
Paul Feig added:
I love action comedy and extreme physical comedy and this movie has both in abundance, plus a lot of heart and hilarity. This lottery will win us all.
