MAY DECEMBER: NETFLIX WINS TODD HAYNES’ FILM WITH NATALIE PORTMAN AND JULIANNE MOORE

Netflix has won the North American distribution rights for May December , the new film by Todd Haynes starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore presented at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

The film sold for $11 million, marking the biggest sale of the festival. Neon and other buyers were interested in the stock, but Netflix beat out the competition with more than the initial $6 million price tag. The streaming giant obviously hopes that the film will be nominated for the next Academy Awards.

The plot

The film picks up 20 years after the infamous romance between Gracie Atherton-Yu and her husband, Joe, made the tabloids because he was 23 years younger. When their twins are about to graduate high school, Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry travels to the scenic coast of Maine to spend time with family and learn more about Gracie, who she will play in a film.
Family dynamics begin to crumble under the pressure of the outside gaze.

Producing is Jessica Elbaum and Will Ferrell for Gloria Sanchez Productions (Hustlers, Booksmart, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) and Christine Vachon (Shirley) and Pam Koffler of Killer Films with Portman and Sophie Mas for MountainA .
The film is written by Samy Burch , based on a story he co – wrote with Alex Mechanik .
