More fiber optics in Peru: this is how connectivity grew during the first quarter of 2023

The telecommunications regulatory body, OSIPTEL , reported an increase in the connectivity of the regions, with 45.1% of the total connections and a greater presence of fiber optics outside of Lima.

Fixed internet connection in  Peru increased by 5% during the first quarter of 2023, according to the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications ( OSIPTEL ). Nearly 3.3 million connections were reported, 5.0% higher than the figure for the same period of the previous year and with a greater impact in regions, concentrating 45.1% of the total connections and experiencing an increase in their participation as a whole.

Access to fixed internet service is crucial to boost the growth and development of people in Peru, since it allows the necessary connectivity for work, study and entertainment. In the last 12 months, fixed internet connections increased by 155,470, which demonstrates the growing importance of this service in the country.

The fixed internet access market has become more competitive with the entry of new operators, which has led to an increase in the commercial and technological offers available to users. During the first quarter, companies such as Telefónica experienced a decrease in the number of connections, while others, such as the group made up of WI-NET and Optical Technologies, and Wow, saw a significant increase in the number of connections.

Regarding the technologies used, fiber optics has experienced an increase in its share, while cable modems have fallen. The use of technologies such as xDSL and Wimax has decreased and represents a small part of the market.

During the first quarter of 2023, the operating companies reported a total of 3,289,767 fixed internet connections in Peru, which represents an increase of 5.0% compared to the same period of the previous year. The residential internet segment, intended for homes, registered 3,071,302 connections, which corresponds to 93.4% of the total reported.
