Samsung leads the world sales of cell phones while Apple passes Xiaomi

Market research firm Canalys predicts a Black Friday without aggressive sales due to low equipment inventory.

The third quarter of 2021 saw cell phone brands unable to keep up with demand amid the semiconductor crisis.

The mobile market shrank 6%, according to market analysis firm Canalys .

Samsung on top, while Apple passes Xiaomi

Preliminary figures for shipments during the third quarter keep Samsung as the leader, with a 23% market share, the same that it held during the same period in 2020.

The surprise comes with Apple , which happened to Xiaomi . The iPhone rose from 12% to 15%, while Xiaomi is maintained at a 14% share.

The group of the top five places is completed by Vivo (10%) and Oppo (10%), both companies of the conglomerate BBK Electronics, which includes Realme and OnePlus .

You shouldn’t expect big promotions on cell phones

Canalys indicates that the current inventory situation will make it difficult for us to see big discounts on cell phones … not even on Black Friday .

“Many channels are nervous ahead of big sales dates like Singles Day in China and Black Friday in the West. The inventory of cell phones in the channels is already low. (…) Customers should expect discounts to be less aggressive this year, ”said Ben Stanton, principal analyst at Canalys .
