It hadn’t been talked about for a while, but now Variety reports that Amazon has ordered the production of Silk
Spider Society and other live-action series based on Marvel characters to which Sony owns the rights (all related in some way to the Spider-Man universe ).
Silk: Spider Society will center on the eponymous superhero,Cindy Moon, who was introduced eight years ago in the Wallcrawler comics. Cindyis a former classmate ofPeter Parkerwho was bitten by the same radioactive spider, developing spider powers of her own.
The showrunner will be Angela Kang , who currently holds the same role on The Walking Dead , now nearing its conclusion. Between 2020 and 2021 there was talk of Lauren Moon and then of Tom Spezialy at the helm of the series, but evidently the situation has changed. Phil Lord and Chris Miller , writers and producers of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequels, remain attached as executive producers. Here are their statements:
Angela is a professional among professionals whose views and creativity we greatly respect and admire. She is also a hoot. She loves these characters, and we feel very fortunate for the opportunity to work with her to tell the world about Cindy Moon.
Angela Kang added:
I am more than excited to join the Amazon Studios family for the next chapter in my career. I look forward to working with the executive team on diverse, witty, character-driven shows for global audiences, and I’m very excited to immerse myself in my first challenge: bringing Korean-American superheroine Silk to life on screen.
We don’t know what other series ordered by Amazon and based on Sony ‘s Marvel characters . However, Silk: Spider Society will be released in the US on MGM+, and worldwide on Prime Video .
We will keep you posted.
Who is Silk?
Created by Dan Slott (text) and Humberto Ramos (art) on The Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 2014, Cindy was a classmate of Peter Parker ‘s in high school, and was bitten by the same radioactive spider that gave the powers to Weave them. The girl acquired the same abilities, namely superhuman strength, speed and reflexes, spider-sense and the ability to adhere to walls; in addition, she is able to emit organic webs from her fingers. For years she was segregated in a bunker by Ezekiel Sims , who wanted to protect her from Morlun and other predatory spiders. She was later freed by Spider-Man, with whom he had a predominantly sexual relationship.
Rumors about the series
The latest rumors claim that Cindy ‘s origin will be very different from the comics and won’t involve Spider-Man . Apparently, Le Cindy will return home after spending time abroad doing fieldwork in an isolated region, and she will find that her family is missing. Her main motivation will be to find her, while she lives with an overdeveloped empathy that allows her to feel the emotions of those around her. It is unclear under what circumstances she will gain her powers.
Production
Phil Lord and Chris Miller will executive produce Silk: Spider Society alongside Amy Pascal , former head of Sony Pictures Entertainment .
Cindy Moon in live action
Cindy Moon has already appeared fleetingly in live-action: Tiffany Espensen lent her face in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War . The version of Cindy that we will see in the series will not be tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe , being a Sony production .
