In 2019 Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrived in theaters , the third and final chapter of the so-called sequel trilogy that began in 2015 with The awakening of the Force .
This is the last film of the saga to arrive at the cinema, the franchise then continued on the small screen with series such as The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor but when will we see the next film?
We do not know.
Several projects have been announced over the years, but so far none have received the official green light. More details will be revealed during the Star Wars Celebration , which will take place from April 7 to 10, in the meantime Variety has published a report on the future of the saga, clarifying some titles that, apparently, have been shelved.
Rogue Squadron by Patty Jenkins
Announced in December of 2020, the Patty Jenkins -directed film never went into production. Disney had removed it from the calendar without giving explanations and the director herself had proved doubtful about the future of the project. Well, according to what was reported by Variety, the film has been definitively shelved.
The Star Wars film produced by Kevin Feige
Announced in 2019, this project seems to have remained in development until May of 2022. However, the film will not happen. Michael Waldron who was involved in the filming is currently busy with Avengers: Secret Wars and Feige himself seems to have backed out, due to his commitment to Marvel Studios .
The Star Wars movie directed by (and starring) Taika Waititi
Apparently this is the closest project to becoming concrete and could arrive at the cinema in December 2025. And that’s not all, as reported by Variety, Taika Waititi will not only participate as director but will also have a role in his film.
A new project directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy
It also seems that there is another project in the pipeline. A film directed by documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy , written by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson .
