How many steps are needed per day to maintain a healthy life ? Many device and app companies promote 10,000 steps a day, but how true is this?

A study published in The Lancet investigated this question, which surely many people are asking.

More or less than 10 thousand steps?

The conclusions of the meta-analysis of 15 studies that evaluated the number of steps , health status and lifestyle habits of 47,000 people in different countries indicate that you do not necessarily have to reach 10,000 steps a day.

Actually, a good figure is around 6 thousand steps, since no greater benefit was found when reaching 10 thousand steps.

In the case of young people, it is recommended to register between 7 thousand and 8 thousand steps daily.

Not everyone’s case

Obviously, there are exceptions. In the case of people who are overweight and/or have a sedentary life, it is more than recommended to accumulate more steps, with the 10 thousand previously proposed as a good alternative.

It is also recommended to add cardiovascular exercise and other types of training to complement a healthy day.
