As we already anticipated, Del Toro will adapt The Buried Giant , the fantasy novel written by Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro .

The novel follows an elderly English couple, Axl and Beatrice, who live in a fictional post-Arthurian England where no one is capable of retaining long-term memories.

The synopsis of the book

The legendary King Arthur is now dead and the peace he imposed on future England remains fragile. In Axl and Beatrice’s dark abode, however, there is no place for any peace. The elderly married couple is afflicted by a sort of inexplicable amnesia. It seems to be caused by a strange fog that is infecting the whole kingdom. Axl and Beatrice remember having had a son, but they no longer know where he is, or what separated them from him. In spite of old age and the dangers they must set out and discover the origin of the enchanted mist, before the memory of what they hold most dear is lost forever.

The cast

Del Toro is directing and producing the film, which he will co-write with Dennis Kelly (Matilda the Musical). The production company will be ShadowMachine , a company specializing in stop motion, as in Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio .

Scott Stuber , the president of Netflix Films, said:

“Guillermo del Toro is a visionary director and a master of his craft. We couldn’t be more proud of him receiving the prestigious Pinocchio award, and are delighted to continue our creative partnership as he develops his next project with Netflix.”

Del Toro added:

“The Buried Giant continues my partnership with Netflix and our exploration of stop-motion as a means to tell complex stories and build limitless worlds. It is a great honor and responsibility for me to direct this screenplay that Dennis Kelly and I are adapting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and imaginative novel.”
