James Cameron ‘s future is linked to sequels to Avatar , but he has revealed that he is interested in directing a personal project before starting work on Avatar 4 .
Speaking to the LA Times, Cameron confessed that he would like to find the time to direct the adaptation of The Last Train From Hiroshima: The Survivors Lost Book written by Charles R. Pellegrino . The filmmaker optioned the rights to the book in 2010.
A current project
Reflecting on the war in Ukraine and resurgent nationalism, he said:
“We live in a more precarious world than we thought. I think the Hiroshima movie would be as timely as ever, if not more so. It reminds people of what these weapons really do when used against human targets.”
Last Train takes place over two days and intertwines the testimonies of residents of the two cities and the Japanese government’s response to the attack, with details from American pilots who experienced firsthand the atomic blasts and their reactions to the damage provoke yourself.
The story centers on individuals such as Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a hibakusha (person affected by the blast) who was the only person confirmed by the Japanese government to have survived the pika-don (flash-bang) of both attacks.
The Avatar franchise
Cameron has already wrapped shooting on the third film, which was shot simultaneously with Avatar: Running Water . The fourth and fifth films are in different stages of production, their distribution is scheduled in US theaters on December 18, 2026 and December 22, 2028, respectively.
Avatar 3 , currently in post-production, is slated for a December 20, 2024 release.
