The series inspired by the novel by Walter Tevis (also author of The Queen of Chess ) from which the cult of Nicolas Roeg The Man Who Fell to Earth , starring David Bowie , was based .

The series, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Naomie Harris and Bill Nighy , was originally conceived by showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet .as a miniseries, but the two had changed their minds midway through the first season. However, apparently, Showtime executives were delighted with the first season and deemed the ending to be adequate.

A Showtime spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter :

We thank the extraordinary Alex Kurtzman, Jenny Lumet, John Hlavin and Sarah Timberman, who did a great job adapting the film with David Bowie into such a current story. And kudos to the wonderful cast, led by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Naomie Harris and Bill Nighy, for bringing it to life. Alex and Jenny initially conceived The Man Who Fell to Earth as a self-concluding story. As much as we flirted with the idea of expanding it into a second season, in the end we decided to take it as a well-told one-season story.

Authors and cast

Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet , co-creators of Clarice (the sequel to The Silence of the Lambs ) and executive producers of Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard , developed the project. The cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor ,  Naomie Harris and Bill Nighy as Thomas Newton, the alien played by David Bowie in the film.

Harris plays Justin Falls, a brilliant scientist and engineer who must fight her own demons in the race to save two worlds. Jimmi Simpson will play Spencer Clay, a CIA agent whose obsession with the Alien’s true identity slowly drives him mad. Ejiofor will be the Alien. The cast of The Man Who Fell to Earth will also see Kate Mulgrew, Joana Ribeiro, Josh Herdman, Rob Delaney and Clarke Peters .

The producers

Kurtzman and Lumet are showrunners along with John Hlavin . Kurtzman has directed several episodes. Rola Bauer, Tim Halkin, Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly and Heather Kadin are executive producers. The series is produced by CBS Studios and Tandem Productions, a StudioCanal company, in association with Kurtzman and Timberman / Beverly’s Secret Hideout. StudioCanal owns the rights to both the novel and the film by Nicolas Roeg .
