The plot

The Tender Bar tells the story of JR (Sheridan), a fatherless boy who grows up in the fumes of a bar run by Uncle Charlie (Affleck), the most brilliant and original of the bizarre and expansive father figures he meets in his childhood. . As the boy’s determined mother (Rabe) struggles to offer her son opportunities she was denied – and leaves the ruined home of her extravagant and, despite herself, supportive father (Christopher Lloyd) – JR begins to courageously pursue. , though not always gracefully, her romantic and professional dreams – with one foot constantly in Uncle Charlie’s bar.

A particularly important role for Ben Affleck , who came at the right moment in his career. As stated by the actor:

I’ve had this dialogue with George over the years about the benefits of getting old. One of them is that you can play more interesting roles. People are willing to give you more credibility, they tend to give you more depth and this helps them to believe you when you try more complicated roles. He told me about the opportunities to play more interesting roles that came to him as he grew up and was always confident it would happen to me too. And it happened.

As for young lead Tye Sheridan, working with George Clooney was a unique experience.

I think what makes him unique is the fact that he is both an actor and a director. From this point of view the dynamics in the way he conducts is very nuanced. I’ve never had an experience like this with another director. I think it’s because very often he directs you from an actor’s perspective and that’s a lot of fun. You almost feel like you’re playing the scenes together.

The screenplay for The Tender Bar was written by William Monahan , Oscar-winning screenwriter for The Departed .
