These are the trends for the smartphone market this 2023, according to Canalys.
The Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the most important event in the mobile industry, is about to start . The annual meeting takes place in the midst of a difficult period for the industry, particularly in terms of cell phone shipments .
According to the consulting firm Canalys , cell phone shipments fell by 11% in 2022 compared to 2021.
What awaits us this 2023?
Canalys made its projections for 2023 and 2024 in terms of cell phone shipments .
According to its projection for 2023, this will be slightly less than that of 2022 with a -0.3% variation, totaling 1.19 billion cell phones shipped globally.
For 2024, the consultant projects an improving outlook. With 1.22 billion units, this would represent a growth of 2.5%.
“Shipments are expected to grow moderately at 2.5% in 2024 thanks to a gradually improving macroeconomic environment,” explains Canalys .
Canalys also noted that high-end cell phones priced above $800 account for more and more shipments. The market share of this type of equipment was 11% in 2020 and climbed to 18% in 2022.
5G and foldable cell phones: what to expect?
The consultancy also expects growth in the market share of cell phones with 5G connectivity . Between 2021 and 2022, this grew from 41% to 53%. By 2023 it is projected to reach 60% of the total market.
Samsung , the leader in global mobile phone shipments, has taken steps aimed at much greater adoption of 5G, equipping its entry-level Galaxy A14 range with this connectivity.
